VODAFONE UK AND HUAWEI ANNOUNCE SUCCESSFUL 4G TRIAL USING SMALL CELL TECHNOLOGY ON 2.6GHZ SPECTRUM

Pioneering Lampsite LTE technology will provide enterprises with in-building coverage solutions

Vodafone and Huawei today announced that Vodafone UK’s 4G service using its 4G 2.6Ghz spectrum on a small cell system is now successfully deployed in Huawei’s UK headquarters, giving employees and visitors 4G data speeds of up to 82Mbps downlink and 42Mbps uplink.

The service launch, using Huawei’s ‘LampSite’ LTE 2.6, was witnessed by Vodafone UK’s CTO Fergal Kelly along with members of his team.

Created in partnership between the companies’ technology and innovation teams, Huawei will continue to develop the technology with plans for Vodafone UK to offer the Lampsite technology to its medium and large business customers at a later date.

Fergal Kelly, CTO of Vodafone UK, stated: “I am delighted to see 2.6Ghz in action on small cell and the impressive data speeds it offers. I’m also impressed with the rapid response from Huawei to this innovation challenge from Vodafone. One year to the day from initial discussion to live product is fantastic and such pace of innovation will be invaluable to Vodafone as we continue to build out the UK’s strongest network.”

“We are totally aligned with our customer’s Enterprise market needs,” said Dr. Zhou Yuefeng, President of Huawei’s small cell and Wifi product line. “This solution is a result of our key joint innovations with Vodafone and is designed with the technology and business requirements of our valued customers in mind.”

Having made the UK’s first mobile phone call and sent the first text message, Vodafone has a history as a tech pioneer. In 2018 we made the UK’s first live holographic call using 5G, and were first to start carrying live 5G traffic from a site in Salford, Greater Manchester. We now have 5G in more places than anyone else, with multiple locations now live across the UK and the rest of Europe.

Today we serve more than 18 million mobile and fixed line customers in the UK, with 4G network coverage at 99%.  Our customers voted us the UK’s Best Mobile Network at the 2018 Trusted Reviews Awards – for the second year in a row. To help deliver Gigabit UK, our full-fibre broadband roll-out programme now covers 15 UK towns and cities through partnerships with CityFibre and Openreach.

Connectivity is at the heart of what we do as it gives us a huge opportunity for good. We are using our network, products, talents and technology to help society prosper and respond to significant social and environmental issues.  Our free Digital Parenting magazine is helping families and schools across the UK to navigate the online world safely. Meanwhile, the Vodafone Foundation’s work with researchers at Imperial College is developing personalised cancer treatment using the processing power of smartphones.
