Faster 4G mobile data connectivity and improved voice coverage are now available in more places across Cardiff than ever before, thanks to a significant investment by Vodafone in its Welsh network.

As part of the digital upgrade, Vodafone’s 4G coverage is now available to over 99% of the city’s population*, and our network is carrying more data traffic, including music streaming, videos, social media posts and internet browsing than ever before.

We are also increasing network capacity around key locations and sporting venues to ensure customers are always connected, even during busy events. For example, a temporary Vodafone mobile coverage trailer is being installed within Cardiff Bay to support the Volvo Ocean Race Cardiff stopover which arrived this week. One of the on-water safety boats will also have one of Vodafone’s latest IoT technology devices** to send back location-based information to visitors to our stand in the Cardiff Race Village.

As part of our overall network improvements in Cardiff, a dedicated coverage and capacity solution has been installed within areas of the St David’s Shopping Centre. Over 5,000 metres of cabling and more than 100 concealed router boxes and antennae have been installed to date, ensuring visitors to one of Wales’ busiest shopping centres are able to keep in touch. Further improvements are planned for the rest of the centre later in the year.

Vodafone UK’s Chief Technology Officer Scott Petty said: “Mobile connectivity plays a vital role in supporting the local economy and keeping communities in touch across Cardiff. We have already invested significantly in our Welsh network and we are not stopping there. We will continue to work with communities, the Welsh government and local politicians to identify new sites so that our customers can enjoy our most reliable network in Wales.”

About Vodafone UK

Vodafone UK is a technology communications company that connects people, businesses and devices to help our customers benefit from digital innovation. Our services span mobile, fixed-line connections, home and office broadband, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

We have a strong track record as a tech pioneer, making the UK’s first mobile phone call, sending the first text message, and making the UK’s first live holographic call using 5G in 2018. We were the first to start carrying live 5G traffic from a site in Salford, Greater Manchester and now have 5G in locations across Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain as well as the UK. Meanwhile, our 4G network coverage currently reaches over 99% of the UK population.

Today, Vodafone serves more than 18 million mobile and fixed-line customers in the UK. Vodafone is the largest provider of full fibre in the UK – our superfast broadband services are now available to nearly 12 million homes across the UK.

Sustainability is also at the heart of what we do: as of 1 July 2021, 100% of the grid electricity we use in the UK is certified to be from renewable sources.
