Johnston Press advances its digital newsroom with Vodafone UK

Johnston Press, one of the UK’s largest media companies, is working with Vodafone UK to transform its technology infrastructure as it evolves its digital newsroom.

Johnston Press, one of the UK’s largest media companies and the publisher of the national newspaper i, The Yorkshire Post, The Scotsman and Northern Ireland’s News Letter, is working with Vodafone UK to transform its technology infrastructure as it evolves its digital publishing strategy.

Vodafone is providing data centre, workforce mobility and network services to support the delivery of two strategic transformation programmes at Johnston Press – ‘Newsroom of the Future’ and ‘Salesforce of the Future’ – which have been rolled out across its national and regional news outlets.

These programmes introduce a new flexible working model for Johnston Press staff, giving reporters and field sales teams the ability to work in any location, at any time, with access to the online services and digital platforms they need. As part of this initiative, Johnston Press is trialing the use of live streaming to relay news stories via smartphones to its online media outlets and looking at new ways to enhance the advertising experience.

Lee Whitworth, Head of Enterprise Technology at Johnston Press, commented: “Digital is core to our business strategy and how we engage with our customers and communities. Working with Vodafone, we have been able to increase the agility and capabilities of our technology and communications infrastructure, as we evolve the way we work. It’s great to have them as our technology partner and have access to their expertise and technology foresight as we continue to innovate.”

Phil Mottram, Enterprise Director at Vodafone UK, said, “Cloud, mobile and enhanced connectivity offer organisations a great opportunity to rethink the way they work if delivered in harmony with strategic business goals. This enables customers to move to new operational models, tap into new market opportunities and be more responsive and adaptable to change. We are pleased to be working with Johnston Press as part of its team to deliver value to its business, staff and customers and help advance its digital services.”

Working in partnership with Johnston Press, Vodafone UK is providing:

  • Co-location data centre services to enable secure hosting and delivery of digital content and applications. Working with Vodafone’s Cloud and Hosting Service, Johnston Press has reduced its data centre footprint by 70% while being able to scale its services. It has also achieved greater efficiency through better energy management and space reduction.
  • Smarter ways of working for its 2,500 business, editorial and sales staff, enabling more effective collaboration between teams. Vodafone is providing access to new digital services from smart devices that will innovate how reporters engage with communities and sales teams with advertising customers.
  • A ten-fold expansion of network capacity, from 10 gigabits (Gb) to 100Gb, across its infrastructure. This upgrade will equip the company to handle increased data demands and traffic as the company develops its digital news channels, capabilities and advertising services.

About Vodafone UK

Vodafone UK connects people, businesses and devices to help our customers benefit from digital innovation. Our services span mobile, fixed line connections, home and office broadband and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Having made the UK’s first mobile phone call and sent the first text message, Vodafone has a history as a tech pioneer. In 2018 we made the UK’s first live holographic call using 5G, and were first to start carrying live 5G traffic from a site in Salford, Greater Manchester. We now have 5G in more places than anyone else, with multiple locations now live across the UK and the rest of Europe.

Today we serve more than 18 million mobile and fixed line customers in the UK, with 4G network coverage at 99%.  Our customers voted us the UK’s Best Mobile Network at the 2018 Trusted Reviews Awards – for the second year in a row. To help deliver Gigabit UK, our full-fibre broadband roll-out programme now covers 15 UK towns and cities through partnerships with CityFibre and Openreach.

Connectivity is at the heart of what we do as it gives us a huge opportunity for good. We are using our network, products, talents and technology to help society prosper and respond to significant social and environmental issues.  Our free Digital Parenting magazine is helping families and schools across the UK to navigate the online world safely. Meanwhile, the Vodafone Foundation’s work with researchers at Imperial College is developing personalised cancer treatment using the processing power of smartphones.

We are part of Vodafone Group, one of the world’s largest technology communications companies, with mobile operations in 26 countries, partnerships with mobile networks in 55 more, and fixed broadband operations in 19 markets.  As of 30 September 2019, Vodafone Group had approximately 625 million mobile customers, 27 million fixed broadband customers, and 22 million TV customers – including all of the customers in Vodafone’s joint ventures and associates.
