What are the best free apps for homeschooling your kids?

Guardian Labs has published its list of top apps for educating your children during the lockdown. Here are some of their tips, along with a few of our own, to keep schoolwork ticking over.

Working from home if you’re not used to it can be enough of a challenge, but doing so while also home schooling your kids has left many parents feeling frazzled.

It’s a daunting task, but thankfully, there’s plenty of help around.

A wide range of websites and apps are offering free educational resources for children of all ages. For example, national institution Sir David Attenborough will be teaching geography on BBC Bitesize, while fitness coach Joe Wicks continues his hugely popular PE lessons on YouTube every week day.

Surprisingly, “royalty-related” EastEnder Danny Dyer has taken a short-career break from acting in favour of holding history lessons for five-to-seven-year-olds (also on BBC Bitesize).

Of course, education isn’t just for kids.

‘Brush up on existing skills’

Vodafone UK customers can now access a wide range of online courses for free, including 100,000 courses on educational hub Udemy, and extended access to Perlego’s online learning library of 300,000 academic and non-fiction books.

Anne Sheehan, Business Director, Vodafone UK, said: “We’re delighted to offer our customers free access to the extensive suite of courses available on Udemy and Perlego.”

It will help people “brush-up on existing skills, learn new ones, or explore new hobbies.”

If you’re at home stuck with the question: “What can I do with the children next?” ringing in your ears, here are some of The Guardian’s suggestions, with a few of our own in for good measure:

  • CBeebies – helping pre-schoolers learn through games, video clips and songs.
  • Brain Pop – animations and videos teaching children about various subjects including science, English, maths and more.
  • Duolingo – the world’s most popular language learning app – earn points for correct answers, race against the clock and increase your proficiency with bite-sized lessons.
  • BBC Bitesize – helping your kids with their homework and revision, no matter their age or exam board. Access free videos, step-by-step guides, activities and quizzes.
  • Senecalearning – helping to improve your kids’ A Level and GCSE revision.
